# Tool Locker: Building a Smart, Secure Tool Management App

Tools are more than just equipment, they are an investment. Tradespeople
and DIY enthusiasts need a reliable way to manage, track and protect
their tools. **Tool Locker** gives them a straightforward way to
organise, scan and monitor each item.

## The Challenge

The client came to us with a concept for a tool management app. Their
goal was clear: give users a way to prevent theft, assist in the
recovery of stolen tools and enable secure transfers, while keeping the
experience simple and intuitive.

Users faced several common frustrations:

* Losing track of tools or accidentally duplicating entries
* Difficulty proving ownership when tools are lost, stolen or resold
* No straightforward method to transfer tools safely to others
* Complexity in managing tool status and ensuring data is secure

## Our Role

At Eager Logic, we handled the full design and development of the
project:

* **UI/UX Design:** Crafted intuitive flows for adding tools, scanning
  serial numbers and managing tool status
* **Flutter App Development:** Built a responsive cross-platform mobile
  app for Android and iOS
* **Firestore Backend:** Implemented live database integration, cloud
  sync and secure user authentication
* **Notifications and Alerts:** Developed warnings for duplicate tools
  and stolen items, guiding users on next steps
* **Admin Interface:** Built support and reporting tools for managing
  tool statuses, premium subscriptions, password resets and subscriber
  analytics

## Key Features

Tool Locker gives users practical features for tracking, protecting and
transferring ownership of their equipment:

* **Serial Number Tracking:** Each tool has a unique identifier, scanned
  via QR code (Data Matrix) or text recognition, helping prevent theft
  and support recovery of lost or stolen tools
* **Proof of Purchase:** Users can attach a purchase receipt photo,
  creating verifiable ownership records for resale, gifting or recovery
  purposes
* **Tool Transfers:** Tools can be securely transferred from one user to
  another, maintaining a clear ownership history
* **Tool Status Management:** Mark tools as Ok, On Loan or Lost/Stolen
  for up-to-date visibility
* **Cloud Backup and Sync:** Keep tool records safe and accessible
  across devices

## Outcomes

* **Delivered a complete cross-platform product:** Designed and built a
  Flutter app for Android and iOS, supported by backend services and
  admin tooling.
* **Made ownership and transfers more reliable:** Users can record proof
  of purchase, track tool status and transfer items with a clearer
  ownership history.
* **Reduced friction around tool management:** Serial number scanning,
  duplicate warnings and stolen-item checks help users manage tools with
  more confidence.
* **Created a stronger operational setup:** Admin tools gave the client
  a practical way to manage support tasks, subscriptions and reporting
  as the product grew.

## Impact

Tool Locker makes it easier for people to manage their tools. Users can
track every item in their collection, with proof of ownership and a
secure way to transfer tools when needed.

The serial number system reduces the risk of theft and enables recovery
when a tool is reported stolen. Proof-of-purchase photos add another
layer of trust, particularly when tools are resold or gifted. Users feel
more in control and better organised, which makes the whole process less
stressful.

## Conclusion

Tool Locker shows how **Eager Logic** combines UI/UX design, mobile
development and backend engineering to turn a concept into a secure
product that people can use every day. With Flutter, Firestore and a
clear user experience, we built an app that helps tradespeople and DIY
enthusiasts manage, protect and transfer their tools with confidence.
